Reading the nightmare reality that is our Canadian National Women’s Soccer team at the moment, I found some notes that might be of interest….
A USC/Purdue study published on March 24, 2021 found that women’s sports was severely underrepresented in television news and online media coverage. The study found that 95% of TV coverage focused on men’s sports. Coverage devoted to women’s sports in the study’s sample of daily social posts on Twitter was 8.7%. Of the 93 newsletters analyzed, 8 led with a story about women’s sports; that’s less than 9%.
In the USA nearly 40% of athletes are female, but they only receive 2%-4% of media coverage. Wonder what the data might be in Canada – better or worse?
At 14, Canadian girls drop out of sport at twice the rate of boys. WHY? Lack of mentorship:
“You cannot be what you cannot see.”
Content showing athletes in action is 12% more likely to drive interest. That includes driving interest in little girls. What can we do to help?
