Had a good chat with a friend a few weeks ago following a mediocre round of golf. In case you were wondering, that’s the norm – the mediocre round of golf, not the chat about balance. I’ve been thinking about balance ever since…
I’ve never been one for balance. Have you? I recognize that I may not be wired for balance but have found new ways to spend my time less, shall we say, narrowly focused. It hasn’t been easy but like you, readers, I do the work.
For years, it was a goal of mine to play sport at a national level. Although very short lived, I did get a few opportunities. The process to the “top” was long and arduous, and, at the time, it certainly felt worth it. Now, looking back and thinking about balance, I wonder what other things I should have tried had I been more balanced. I’ll never know and I wouldn’t change a thing. I did what I did with the knowledge and skills that I had at the time. As they say, hindsight is 20/20. All I can do now is look ahead and ensure more balance is included in my future. It feels like I am getting closer.
Balance got me thinking about passion. Is balance realistic when involving a passion? In other words, is being unbalanced because of a passion of yours a bad thing or a good thing? Is it even a thing? How does one find balance when one loves something wholeheartedly? Should they? Genuine questions.
When thinking about balance and passion, I always think about this Mark Twain quote:
“Find a job you enjoy doing, and you will never have to work a day in your life.”
I’d like to say I’ve never worked a day in my life, but I can’t. I have been fortunate, however, to have been paid good money to do things I thoroughly enjoyed. I have always jumped out of bed in the mornings to start my day – to get to work. I am very grateful for that. I know many are not so lucky. Or it is passionate?
